Graffiti – is it always a criminal activity, or can this art form more critically explore social issues? The underworld is a hidden, dark, and dreary place that lurks beneath the world most people know and recognize. Inhabiting dangerous places on society’s fringes, artists in the underworld work amidst broken glass, debris and syringes. They endure frequent hostility from drug users and individuals who call the underworld their home. Uninterested with “getting up” in the mainstream art world, artists in the underworld create work for people who may never step foot in a gallery. Their work moves beyond the boundaries of traditional art. Untamed by the rules put in place for traditional audiences, their art is deeply engaged in issues of poverty and injustice.
